Wolf Haldenstein was founded not later than 1888, when Simson Wolf was in practice with Sol Kohn under the firm name Wolf & Kohn. Walter Wolf joined his father and Sol Kohn in 1918. He was followed by Herbert Haldenstein in 1923, Theodore Adler in 1933 and John Freeman in 1935. The current appellation of our firm began in 1946 with the re-naming of Wolf & Kohn as Wolf Haldenstein Adler & Freeman. John Herz was then an associate, and when he became a partner in 1948 his name was added.

From the time of its founding until 1924, Wolf & Kohn's offices were in the Wall Street area. In 1924 our firm became one of the original tenants of 270 Madison Avenue, where we have now been for more than 80 years. During that time, we have been fortunate to find space right at home as our needs arose, growing to our present occupancy of three full floors.

Initially recognized as one of New York City's leading trusts and estates firms, our firm has consistently grown both in practice areas and attorneys. Early expansion entailed real estate, corporate and labor law and commercial litigation. As recently as the early 1980's there were still less than 20 attorneys in the firm. Since then, we have seen exponential growth in our sophisticated, national class action litigation practice and have enhanced our real estate work with large transactional, cooperative and condominium clients. In addition, our corporate practice has expanded to include not-for-profit and health care as separate practice areas. Today, Wolf Haldenstein has approximately 70 lawyers and offices in New York, San Diego and Chicago.
